The Role of Creativity in Structured Work

At first glance, structure and creativity can seem like opposites. One is about clarity, order, and consistency. The other is more open-ended, exploratory, and less defined.

In my experience, they’re not in conflict. They actually depend on each other.

I spend much of my time working in structured environments, building frameworks, supporting organizational work, and helping bring clarity to complex initiatives. That kind of work requires focus, precision, and a strong sense of direction.

At the same time, I’ve found that structure alone isn’t enough. Without space for creativity, it becomes harder to think differently, solve problems, and adapt when things don’t go as planned. Creativity doesn’t always look like art. Sometimes it shows up in how you approach a problem, how you reframe a challenge, or how you connect ideas that don’t seem obviously related.

In structured work, these moments matter. They’re often what lead to better solutions, clearer thinking, and more effective outcomes.

Over the last few years, I picked up painting again and rediscovered something important about myself. I learn quickly, especially when a skill blends structure, creativity, and problem-solving. Landscape painting has become my favourite way to explore that.

What surprised me is how closely art mirrors project management.

Painting requires planning, sequencing, risk taking, iteration, and the ability to step back and see the bigger picture. It also requires knowing when to commit and when to adjust. These are the same strengths that support my work every day.

Through painting, I’ve also come to recognize and better understand where I naturally operate best. I’m drawn to environments that bring together ideas, technology, process design, and strategy. Creativity doesn’t sit outside of that work. It supports it.

In structured environments, it’s easy to default to what is known or what has been done before. Processes exist for a reason, and consistency is important. But some of the most meaningful improvements come from asking simple questions.

Is there a better way to do this?
What are we not seeing?
What would this look like if we approached it differently?

Those questions are rooted in creativity.

I’ve seen this in work that involves building systems, improving processes, and supporting organizational initiatives. The goal is not just to create structure, but to create the right structure. That often requires stepping outside of the obvious solution and thinking more broadly about what is needed and why.

There’s also a balance. Too much structure can limit new thinking. Too much openness can make it difficult to move forward. The goal is not to choose one over the other, but to allow both to exist in a way that supports the work. Structure provides direction. Creativity allows for exploration within that direction.

Final Thought

Learning something new later in life has been energizing. It builds adaptability, encourages curiosity, and creates space to see things differently. For me, creativity isn’t separate from my work. It’s part of how I think.
